Meera Bawari

Meera Bawari is a historical-biographical novel for young readers based on the life of the celebrated saint-poet Mirabai. Written by Birendra Mohan Raturi and first published in 1962, the book traces Meera’s journey from a spirited Rajput princess to one of India’s greatest devotees of Lord Krishna.

Raised by her grandfather Rao Duda after the death of her mother, young Meera develops an intense spiritual bond with Krishna. Her devotion deepens when the saint Ravidas gifts her a small idol of Giridhar Gopal, which she comes to regard as her eternal lord and companion.

As Meera grows, she faces the expectations of royal life, marriage, court politics, and social conventions. Yet she remains unwavering in her faith, refusing to abandon her spiritual calling. Through sacrifice, courage, and devotion, Meera emerges as a symbol of divine love, inner freedom, and resistance to worldly pressures.
